Mark S. Garland is a freelance naturalist who plans and leads nature tours and classes for various organizations. Formerly Senior Naturalist for New Jersey Audubon's Cape May Bird Observatory and Maryland-based Audubon Naturalist Society, he now leads tours all over the world. He teaches Elderhostel birding programs in his hometown of Cape May and teaches each summer at the celebrated Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine.
He is an award-winning writer best known for his book Watching Nature: A Mid-Atlantic Natural History. He currently writes a monthly column at www.birdcapemay.org and is the Nature Editor for the weekly Metro Connection program on radio station WAMU, Washington, DC's public radio station. He is engaged in several research projects studying migratory monarch butterflies and birds.
